With the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view only a few days away, I thought it was the perfect excuse to make a list of my top 5 favourite matches that took place in the iconic demonic cell, also known as the ‘Devil’s Playground’. Lets start at number five:
5. UNDERTAKER VS SHAWN MICHAELS – BAD BLOOD 1997
No-one quite knew what to expect from the first ever hell in the cell match at Bad Blood ’97. With his fellow DX members locked outside of the cage, Shawn was forced to go one-on-one with The Deadman in the cell. With The Undertaker on the verge of winning, one of the most memorable debuts ever took place: The Undertaker’s brother, Kane. Making a surprise entrance, Kane went on to rip the cell door off of its hinges and leave Taker lying unconscious after hitting a vicious tombstone, allowing HBK to retain the WWF title.
4. UNDERTAKER VS EDGE – SUMMERSLAM 2008
Undertaker and Edge had one of the most memorable feuds of 2008, ending it at Summerslam. With one of the most unique endings to a match in WWE history (I won’t spoil it, just in case you haven’t seen it), this match makes it fourth on the list.
3. UNDERTAKER VS TRIPLE H – WRESTLEMANIA 28
After being carried out on a stretcher after their match at Wrestlemania 27, The Undertaker then took on Triple H one more time – but this time we would see it played out in the Devil’s Playground. With Shawn Michaels as the special guest referee, Undertaker’s undefeated streak at Mania looked destined to end – but as always, The Deadman found a way to win and keep the streak alive.
2. TRIPLE H VS CACTUS JACK – NO WAY OUT 2000
The match that ended Mick Foley’s career was one of the most violent entries on the list. Not only did Triple H send Foley crashing through the roof of the cell, but also crashing through the ring.
- THE UNDERTAKER VS MANKIND – KING OF THE RING 1998
Of course this one had to be number one on the list! We all know this historic match, and nobody will ever forget the iconic image of Mankind being thrown from the top of the cell and crashing through the announcer’s table within seconds of the start of the match . For a normal human that would have been enough to end it – but Foley somehow managed to continue the match, only to then be put through the roof of the cell sending him crashing to the ring mat.
