A LOOK BACK AT DAFFNEY IN WCW

It all started in November of 1999, when WCW ran a contest as a way to find new talent for the company. After responding to the competition, Daffney was successfully hired in the role of David Flair’s mentally deranged girlfriend.

Daffney became well known for her ear piercing scream while at ringside. This inspiration for what would become her trademark shriek was taken from Juliette Lewis’ character in the film Natural Born Killers. Daffney has also said she took a large amount of inspiration from the Harley Quinn character while developing her own.

Her first appearance came on Nitro on December 6th 1999, when she was shown sitting on her own bed whilst chanting David Flair’s name. After spending several months in Flair’s corner, Vince Russo went on to book Daffney in a match with Miss Elizabeth in May of 2000. This would also be Miss Elizabeth’s first ever career match. The match was Daffney’s first televised match after competing on a couple of house shows and eventually ended in a no contest.

The following week on Nitro, Daffney and Crowbar successfully teamed together to face Chris Candido and Tammy Lee Sytch in a match for the WCW Cruiserweight championship, becoming the first co-champions of the title. Just one week later, Daffney faced Crowbar one-on-one for the title, but after Candido interfered in the match, Daffney inadvertently pinned Crowbar while trying to revive him. This made Daffney the sole and undisputed Cruiserweight champion.

Daffney’s cruiserweight championship reign lasted until June 7 when Lieutenant Loco (Chavo Guerrero) pinned Disco Inferno during a 3-way match to win the title, due to outside interference from Miss Hancock. This then led to a short feud between the two of them as Hancock had stolen the affection of David Flair, resulting in Daffney defeating Hancock in the first ever Wedding Gown match in WCW history, after Hancock removed her own dress.

Daffney then went on to feud with Torrie Wilson up until she was released from the company in Febuary of 2001, due to budget cuts, a month prior to being sold to WWE.

Despite only having a short run in the company, Daffney definitely made a lasting impression with fans and went on to have a successful career in TNA, as well as on the indie circuit. With the constant change of hair colours, T-Shirts with bizarre slogans, as well as that trademark scream, the anti-diva of WCW certainly won’t be forgotten any time soon.
