This Day In Wrestling History: May 20

1974 – Bruno Sammartino triumphs over Killer Kowalski in a thrilling Texas Death match, successfully defending the WWWF World Heavyweight Title at a Madison Square Garden house show.

2000 – At the ECW Hardcore TV tapings in Columbia, South Carolina, Justin Credible retains the ECW World Heavyweight Title against Jerry Lynn. Additionally, Dusty Rhodes emerges victorious over Jack Victory in a hard-fought “Bullrope” match.

2001 – WWF ‘Judgement Day’ takes place in Sacramento, California. “Stone Cold” Steve Austin retains the WWF Championship in a No Holds Barred match against The Undertaker. In another epic encounter, Kurt Angle puts his Olympic medals on the line against Chris Benoit in a Two-out-of-three-falls match, with Angle ultimately emerging victorious in a Ladder Match to retrieve his gold medal. Chris Benoit and Chris Jericho team up to win a Tag Team Turmoil match, earning themselves a shot at the WWF Tag Team Titles. Chyna, in her final appearance for the WWF, successfully defends the Women’s Championship against Lita.

2002 – The Undertaker retains the WWE Undisputed Title in a gripping main event against Rob Van Dam on WWE Raw from Memphis, Tennessee.

2007 – WWE ‘Judgement Day’ unfolds in St. Louis, Missouri. John Cena successfully defends the WWE Championship in the main event, making The Great Khali submit. Bobby Lashley defeats Umaga, Vince McMahon, and Shane McMahon in a Handicap match for the ECW Championship, although he doesn’t capture the title as he doesn’t pin the reigning champion, Vince McMahon. MVP defeats Chris Benoit for the United States Championship in a thrilling Two-out-of-three-falls match, and Edge retains the World Heavyweight Championship against Batista.

2011 – The wrestling world mourns the loss of Randy “Macho Man” Savage, who tragically passes away at the age of 58 in Seminole, Florida. Savage, considered one of the all-time greats, held numerous championships throughout his illustrious 32-year career.

2012 – The third and final Over The Limit pay-per-view by WWE takes place in Raleigh, North Carolina. John Laurinaitis defeats John Cena in the main event, while Christian captures the Intercontinental Championship by defeating Cody Rhodes. CM Punk retains the WWE Championship against Daniel Bryan, and Sheamus successfully defends the World Heavyweight Championship in a Fatal Four-Way match.

2015 – NXT Takeover: Unstoppable electrifies fans in Winter Park, Florida. The highly anticipated NXT Championship match between Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn ends in a no contest, leaving fans on the edge of their seats. Sasha Banks retains the NXT Women’s Title against Becky Lynch.

2017 – EVOLVE #84 showcases a memorable main event as Matt Riddle successfully retains the WWN Title against Kyle O’Reilly in Summit, Illinois.

2017 – NXT Takeover: Chicago captivates audiences as Pete Dunne dethrones Tyler Bate to become the new WWE United Kingdom Champion. Bobby Roode retains the NXT Championship against Hideo Itami, Asuka triumphs in a Triple Threat match to retain the NXT Women’s Title, and The Authors of Pain (Akam & Rezar) fend off DIY (Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa) to retain the NXT Tag Team titles. The event also witnesses the heartbreaking dissolution of DIY, as Ciampa launches a vicious attack on Gargano.

2018 – PROGRESS Chapter 69: Be Here Now showcases memorable moments in Manchester, England. Doug Williams captures the PROGRESS Atlas Title in a gripping Four-Way match. Jinny secures victory over Toni Storm, becoming the new PROGRESS Women’s Champion.

2019 – On Raw in Albany, New York, Universal Champion Seth Rollins and WWE Champion Kofi Kingston join forces to overcome Baron Corbin and Bobby Lashley in a hard-hitting No Disqualification Tag Team match.

2020 – AEW Dynamite’s go-home edition before the Double Or Nothing PPV concludes with an electrifying main event, as “BROKEN” Matt Hardy emerges triumphant over Sammy Guevara.
