Previously, El Desperado called out Jon Moxley who then responded with a proposed Tag Team match where Moxley would team with the Notorious 187 Homicide vs. El Desperado and a partner of his choice. Later NJPW uploaded a video of El Desperado approaching Japanese Deathmatch Icon Jun Kasai to team with him, but there was no answer given.
On June 17 at NJPW “NEW JAPAN ROAD ~Road to STRONG~” in Hachioji following El Desperado’s 8-man tag match, the ‘Crazy Monkey’ Jun Kasai made a surprise appearance to officially accept and team up with Desperado to face Moxley and Homicide at NJPW STRONG “INDEPENDENCE DAY” on July 4 at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo.
Earlier on at the same show, Moxley left another video message, saying that he had seen the video of Desperado asking Jun Kasai to team up and that he was excited, but also raised the stakes saying that if he and Desperado survive, that on the next night, June 5 he has challenged El Desperado to a ‘Final Death’ singles match. The rules of this match seem unclear, but the name certainly hints at it being hardcore.
