Santos Escobar Wins Bittersweet Victory Over Rey Mysterio, Earns Shot at WWE United States Championship

Santos Escobar emerged victorious in a bittersweet ending on the July 28 episode of WWE SmackDown. He defeated Rey Mysterio in the finals of the Number One Contender US Title Invitational, securing his chance to challenge Austin Theory for the WWE United States Championship.

During the intense bout with Mysterio, unfortunately, an injury occurred when Escobar executed a suicide dive, causing Mysterio to hit his head on the ringside mat. As a result, the match was halted, and Escobar was declared the winner by referee Jessika Carr.

Despite the setback, Mysterio showed resilience and was seen moving after the match, even embracing Escobar in a sportsmanlike manner. Officials continued to monitor Mysterio’s condition throughout the show.

Rey Mysterio earned his spot in the finals by defeating Cameron Grimes, LA Knight, and Sheamus in a four-way match, while Santos Escobar qualified by besting Grayson Waller, AJ Styles, and Butch in another four-way bout.

Escobar had previously defeated Theory in a non-title match on the July 21 episode of WWE SmackDown, setting the stage for their US Title clash scheduled to take place on the August 11 episode.
