Anthony Bowens: Billy Gunn’s Retirement at 7/22 AEW Collision Came as a Surprise

Billy Gunn’s Emotional Exit from Wrestling Rings Leaves Acclaimed Wrestler Reflecting

During the July 22nd episode of AEW Collision, The Acclaimed duo comprising Max Caster and Anthony Bowens, alongside Billy Gunn, faced off against The House of Black (Buddy Matthews, Malakai Black, & Brody King) in an intense AEW Trios Championship match. The outcome saw The Acclaimed and Gunn succumb to their opponents’ might.

Following the conclusion of the match, a poignant moment unfolded as Billy Gunn, an industry veteran, symbolically removed his boots and placed them at the center of the ring before departing. This gesture strongly hinted at his decision to retire from the sport.

In a recent conversation on Chris Distefano Presents: Chrissy Chaos, Anthony Bowens was queried about his awareness of the impending retirement scene. He responded, No, I really didn’t. I don’t think the cameras caught it, but I get very emotional when I’m out there because I get connected to the audience, I don’t think I’ve cried in a wrestling ring. I got teary eyed because he stood up and his face was beat red, and at this point in our careers where Billy has been such a beacon of light for us, he’s been guiding us from the beginning since we joined up with him last year. He guided us to the AEW Tag Team Titles in New York City. He’s been teaching us a ton of stuff every single week. To think about not having him out there with us, it hurts,” he said.

Billy Gunn’s exit from the wrestling stage not only marked a significant moment in his illustrious career but also stirred powerful emotions for those he has mentored and worked alongside.
