New Japan Pro Wrestling has confirmed that, in response to a request made by Hiroshi Tanahashi, the IMPACT World Champion Alex Shelley, along with recently crownd 10 time X Division champion Chris Sabin the Motor City Machine Guns and “The Walking Weapon” Josh Alexander, are set to participate in the NJPW event “DESTRUCTION in RYOGOKU” scheduled for October 9. This event will take place at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, where they will challenge Tanahashi, Kazuchika Okada, and Tomohiro Ishii for the coveted NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Championship.
This match came about after the Champions successfully defended their titles against the team of Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Togi Makabe & Tiger Mask IV. As mentioned before, Tanahashi then made the appeal backstage for IMPACT wrestling to send a team. Now that the match is set Okada has commented saying he knows how good the Machine Guns are but, also said quote “IMPACT Wrestling? Give me a break. There’s not a promotion I hate more in this World!…. Actually, I don’t give a damm about IMPACT! Who I really hated was TNA.” This leans into Okada’s young lion excursion to IMPACT (TNA at the time) which did not go well, so bad that the original working agreement between NJPW and TNA was dissolved.
