Over the weekend, AEW World Champion Maxwell Jacob Friedman (MJF) made headlines at AEW Full Gear.
Successfully defending the ROH Tag Team Championships with impromptu partner Samoa Joe, substituting for an injured Adam Cole, MJF faced post-match chaos from The Gunns, leading to him being sent out in an ambulance.
The main event, originally featuring Cole defending Friedman’s title, underwent a dramatic change. However, MJF made a last-minute return to the arena and triumphantly defended the title against Jay White.
MJF’s victory solidifies his status as a prominent figure in AEW. In a recent Sports Illustrated interview, he hinted at the upcoming expiration of his AEW contract, teasing a potential bidding war in 2024.
Despite WWE sources speculating on Friedman’s return, Haus of Wrestling reports multiple WWE insiders denying any talks between MJF and WWE. One high-ranking WWE source even dismissed the notion of MJF entering free agency soon, suggesting he might have quietly re-signed with AEW, potentially until 2027.
