This Day In Wrestling History: May 18


1997 – WCW Slamboree in Charlotte, North Carolina saw Kevin Greene, Ric Flair & Roddy Piper triumph over nWo’s Kevin Nash, Scott Hall & Syxx in a six-person tag match. Steven Regal became the WCW World Television Champion by defeating Ultimo Dragon, while Dean Malenko retained the WCW United States Championship against Jeff Jarrett. Madusa pinned Luna Vachon, and The Steiner Brothers emerged victorious against The Dungeon of Doom.

1998 – On WWF Raw in Nashville, the main event Handicap Tag Team match between ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin and Gerald Brisco & Pat Patterson ended in a no contest. The Disciples of Apocalypse’s 8-Ball & Skull defeated The Legion of Doom.

2002 – ‘The British Bulldog’ Davey Boy Smith passed away at the age of 39 in Invermere, Canada, due to a heart attack. Smith achieved fame in the WWF as a tag team and singles competitor, winning multiple titles. His standout moment was winning the Intercontinental Championship from his brother-in-law Bret “The Hitman” Hart at Wembley Stadium in the main event of SummerSlam 1992, considered one of the greatest wrestling matches ever. Smith was also the inaugural WWF European Champion and holds the record for the longest reign, 206 days. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2021.

2003 – At WWE Judgement Day in Charlotte, North Carolina, Brock Lesnar successfully defended the WWE Championship against The Big Show in a Stretcher Match. Christian won the reinstated Intercontinental Championship in a battle royal, where he illegally rejoined the match to eliminate Booker T and seize the title.

2004 – Chavo Classic captured the WWE Cruiserweight Title in a Triple Threat match against Chavo Guerrero and Spike Dudley at the Smackdown taping in Las Vegas, Nevada.

2008 – WWE Judgement Day in Omaha, Nebraska, featured Triple H retaining the WWE Championship against Randy Orton in a Steel Cage match. The Undertaker defeated Edge to claim the vacant World Heavyweight Championship, while Shawn Michaels emerged victorious against Chris Jericho. John Cena defeated John ‘Bradshaw’ Layfield, and John Morrison & The Miz retained the WWE Tag Team Championship against CM Punk & Kane.

2013 – Jay Briscoe retained the ROH World Heavyweight Championship at ‘ROH: Relentless’ in Richmond, Virginia. Other matches included Tommaso Ciampa defeating Chris LeRusso, Kevin Steen defeating Jimmy Jacobs in a No Disqualification match, and C&C Wrestling Factory (Caprice Coleman & Cedric Alexander) and Jay Lethal triumphing over Matt Taven, Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly in a six-man tag match.

2015 – NXT Champion Kevin Owens made his WWE main roster debut by responding to John Cena’s United States Championship open challenge. The match did not take place as Owens attacked Cena, setting up a champion vs. champion match at the upcoming WWE Network special, Elimination Chamber.
